About the role
The Center for Oral Health Policy and Management (COHPM) at the New York University College of Dentistry seeks a Clinical Assistant Professor of Epidemiology to design and conduct population-based research on oral health, access to care, and health equity, and to translate that evidence into policy, education, and practice.
COHPM's portfolio spans oral health policy analysis, dental workforce and education research, executive and leadership education, and international programs, including the Center's multi-institution Medicare dental initiative, its evidence-based dentistry and artificial intelligence work, and its global leadership programs. The Clinical Assistant Professor of Epidemiology will supply the methodological backbone for this portfolio by framing answerable questions, designing rigorous studies, analyzing complex population data, and publishing findings that inform policy at the national and international level.
The successful candidate will function as an independent investigator with a clearly defined program of research, will pursue extramural funding as principal investigator, and will mentor doctoral and master's-level trainees. The position carries no clinical patient care responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead population-based oral health research examining oral disease burden, oral-systemic health relationships, dental care utilization, access to care, and related population health outcomes using large national, administrative, clinical, and electronic health record datasets.
- Apply advanced epidemiologic and quantitative methods, including multilevel and longitudinal modeling, complex survey analysis, and causal inference, while ensuring rigorous, reproducible, and transparent research practices.
- Conduct health equity and policy-relevant research focused on underserved and underrepresented populations and evaluate the impact of health coverage, financing, and income-support policies on oral health and access to care.
- Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program, including serving as principal investigator and collaborating as a co-investigator or methodological expert on multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, and international research initiatives.
- Disseminate scholarly and policy-relevant findings through peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, policy briefs, technical reports, and other communications for academic, professional, policy, and public audiences.
- Mentor and train the next generation of researchers by supervising students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows; teaching graduate-level courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, and research methods; and mentoring junior faculty in research development and grantsmanship.
- Contribute to the academic and professional community through peer review, editorial and scientific service, participation in professional organizations, and representation of NYU Dentistry and the Center for Oral Health Policy and Management (COHPM) in national and international collaborations.
- Support the mission and strategic priorities of COHPM and NYU Dentistry, including program evaluation, outcomes measurement, international initiatives, institutional committees, and other activities appropriate to the position and academic rank.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $125K - $195K. New York University considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate experience, education and training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market conditions when extending an offer.
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD or international equivalent) in epidemiology, public health, or a closely related population-science discipline, from an accredited institution.
- Professional degree in dentistry (DDS, DMD, or international equivalent) or documented equivalent substantive expertise in oral health science.
- A minimum of five years of full-time academic experience beyond the doctorate in a research-intensive university setting.
- Sustained and substantial record of peer-reviewed publication in oral epidemiology, dental public health, or health services research, including first- and senior-author articles in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Dental Research, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, the Journal of Periodontology, and leading general medical or geriatrics journals.
- Documented experience serving as principal investigator on nationally competitive, peer-reviewed research grants.
- Demonstrated administrative leadership of a graduate research program, such as service as director of a master's and doctoral program in epidemiology or a related discipline.
- Documented record of supervising doctoral and master's students through to degree completion.
- Demonstrated methodological expertise in the design and analysis of population-based surveys and cohort studies, with advanced proficiency in R, Stata, or SAS.
- Evidence of standing in the international scholarly community, such as associate editor or editorial board service for peer-reviewed journals and a sustained record of manuscript review across multiple journals.
- An established program of research addressing health equity and the oral health of underserved and marginalized populations.
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within a United States research-intensive academic environment, evidenced by prior appointment, visiting appointment, or sustained collaboration at a U.S. institution.
- Excellent written and spoken English and demonstrated ability to communicate complex quantitative findings to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Substantive expertise in geriatric oral health, including oral function, dysphagia, frailty, and oral health in long-term care settings.
- Research experience addressing access to primary care and the integration of oral health into general health care delivery systems.
- Experience analyzing data from national health surveillance systems and publicly financed health systems.
- Record of international collaborative research and multilingual capability.
- Familiarity with United States oral health policy architecture, including Medicare and Medicaid dental coverage, dental accreditation through the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and dental workforce policy; or demonstrated capacity to develop such fluency rapidly.
- Experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to health data, or with evidence-based practice methodology, including systematic review and guideline development.
- Prior editorial leadership or service on national scientific advisory bodies.
